Research Essay -- Physician's Assisted Suicide

I changed my topic yesterday as I was about ready to start my essay.  So I have been focusing more on research than starting the first 2.5 pages of my essay.

Thesis:  Although the ability to end your life may benefit a patient experiencing extreme discomfort or inevitable death, it demeans the value of life, leads to eventually passing a euthanasia act, and prohibits the recovery or misdiagnosis of the patient.
A patient that is experiencing extreme discomfort or is diagnosed to pass away within the next few months may benefit from having the ability to choose to take his or her own life, however the value of life is much more important.  In the past decade or so, there have been three states that have found physician's assisted suicide a reasonable right to every individual suffering from an critical illness.  The first of these three states to pass a bill was Oregon.  Under Oregon’s death with dignity act allows, “doctors can prescribe medication to hasten the death of terminally ill patients with six-month prognoses. Patients must be mentally competent and they must administer the medication to themselves.”

  1. Wow, this is a really good topic. I don't know what to think about it, I kind of think that assisted suicide is still suicide and wrong. I'm trying to hurry and find a new topic and this one was high on my list!

  2. You have a very interesting topic that should be easy to write 8 to 10 pages on. Sounds like you know where you are going with the paper. Good luck.

  4. Oooh this is interesting. I actually watched a Grey's Anatomy episode on this recently! It's very controversial. I'm not even sure what I think about it. I'm interested to see how you tackle this one. Looks like you have a good start. Good luck!

  5. just like everyone else is saying—great topic! it would be interesting to hear about a few real-life examples of physician assisted suicides. what are a few arguments for it? does a patient have to request this treatment or can a doctor suggest it initially? what are some of the other laws surrounding it?

  6. That is a really interesting topic. It weirds me out a little though. Something about a doctor helping kill a patient seems strange. Usually the doctor is supposed to help extend peoples lives but in this case they are ending them.
